The Mindset Shift That Helped Me Stop Dwelling on Things
In a recent coffee chat with Sheryl Dubitsky, Senior Marketing Manager at Coach, I asked a question that had been weighing on me:
"How do you handle pain, fear, and loss—especially when life and career feel uncertain?"
Her response changed my perspective:
Those feelings never fully go away—you just get better at handling them.
If it’s out of your control or in the past, accept it and focus on what you 𝘤𝘢𝘯 control. Take one step toward that.
As a senior about to graduate, stepping into the job market, and navigating personal challenges, I needed to hear this. Fear and uncertainty can feel paralyzing, but this advice reminded me that I don’t have to have all the answers—I just have to keep moving.
This conversation also made me realize just how much I was dwelling on the past—things I couldn’t change, things that were out of my control. I was letting them weigh me down when, in reality, they had no power over my present unless I allowed them to. It’s crazy how simply accepting the truth of a situation can completely shift your perspective and free you from the burden of what no longer serves you.
Here’s what I’ve realized:
The unknown will always be there, but so will your ability to adapt.
Accepting what you can’t change frees you to move forward.
Redirecting your energy toward what you can control brings clarity and peace.
Taking one small action can shift your entire mindset.
So if you’re in a season of uncertainty, you’re not alone. Keep showing up for yourself. Keep taking small steps. Eventually, the path will unfold in ways you never expected.
Thank you, Sheryl—I will always treasure that advice. 💭
